4th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in Partnership with the Friends of Pagoda, Oriental Garden Foundation & local Chinese Organizations Sept 12, 2009 The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is often compared to America's Thanksgiving tradition, this time honored Asian holiday marks the end of the summer harvest. The festival is celebrated with family and friends and centers around traditional Asian food and drink. The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival incorporates a wide range of entertainment and programs that include storytelling, authentic Asian Ceremonial fashion shows, ribbon and dragon dancing, martial arts demonstrations, musical and dance recitals. In addition, children can take part in free activities designed to teach them about the Chinese culture. These activities include Chinese paper lantern making, Chinese calligraphy, children's lantern parade and children's costume parade and up close appearances of the Moon Goddess. Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow Wow Aug 15, 2009- Aug 16, 2009 The Nansemond Indians originally lived along the Nansemond River and were part of the empire ruled by Powhatan (father of Pocahontas). The Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow Wow is a two-day cultural celebration honoring the Tribe's heritage. The Pow Wow features music, dance, authentic crafts and food. Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Pow Wow Sept 19, 2009- Sept 20, 2009 Prior to 1607, The Nottoway Indians were one of several distinct groups of Iroquoian speaking native people living in the Virginia-North Carolina coastal plain. The Nottoway remained relatively undisturbed by the English Colony expanding from Jamestown during the first half of the seventeenth century. The Virginia Nottoway Indians will hold their annual Pow Wow in Surry, Va. on September 19 and 20, 2009. This two-day cultural event features American Indian music, dance, Indian crafts and food.
